Review : Juxtapad by Alex Latorre and Mark Mason

Product description: Mark Mason was at the French edition of the Real Magic Roadshow, and blew everyone away with his handling of Juxtapad, it was so smooth and fooling that many magicians did buy it from him there. It has been now released to shops and I can finally talk about it! Basically, Juxtapad is a gimmicked post it note pad with which you make appear, disappear or change any inscription written on it. The main effect taught in the download is the book test, you ask the spectator to say stop on a page, they look at the first word of the page. You write it down on a post it note and you’re correct. Then the post it pad is place in the hand of the spectator and the post it disappear and reappear inside the book, at the exact page they stopped. It’s very interesting, now let’s see if the gimmick is good.

Price and where to buy it: This is sold at $45 and you can find it here : www.magicdream.fr

What you get: You get the usual Mason’s packaging, squared and flat. Inside, you’ll find the gimmick and some supplies in order to make the book test gimmick if you need. The post it note is very well made and you get some spare post it note if you run out of them on the main gimmick. The instruction is clear, Mark goes over 2 routines, the book test and a card trick with Juxtapad. Overall, it’s a bit expensive for what you get but it’s well made and the tricks provided are strong. You won’t be disappointed with what you receive.

The pros and the cons: Here is the core of my review, let's begin with the cons, as I will usually be doing, I prefer to keep the good things for the end.

THE CONS:

  • The pad can’t be thoroughly examined at the end, even though people can have it in their hand so I don’t find this to be a con but I’ll mention it anyway.

  • Same things for the book, can’t be handed out.

THE PROS:

  • This is quite interesting because if you ever run out from post it note pad, you can just place more on the gimmick and you’re ready to go again.

  • It’s more a tool than a trick itself, proof is Mark’s tutorial, you can really do many things with it. Reveal things and make them teleportate, or simply vanish an inscription and have it printed on the spectator’s arm for example (Double Cross anyone?).

  • The gimmick placed in the book for the book test is clever because you can show the full page at first without any post it on it. It’s clever, subtle yet amazing.

  • This can be used as a visual trick or as a delayed vanish so you can really shape the routine as you want with Juxtapad.

Overall rating: This is a nice little piece of trick, it works well, it’s not that hard to perform, simple gimmick and good reactions, what else do you want ? 3/4 hearts.

As for the difficulty level, you’ll get the knack very quickly and may even come with your own handling of it, 2/5 stars.

Similar products: I know the dream pad by Joao Miranda is another gimmick post it note pad but it’s not meant to be seen, it’s not a visual thing and more a mentalism one.
