Review : #Augmented by Renato Cotini & Luca Volpe

Product description : Digital magic is now a thing and I have always been a huge fan of new technologies and magic. So mixing the two together can give something really interesting, especially when VR is in play (Virtual Reality). I think having only technology is not a good thing since many people could come up with the argument “Well, it’s an app”. I think you have to implement a bit of classical magic, such as cards, or classic props people are used to. This is what happend in #Augmented, you have someone selects a card (for example, but it can be a word, a number etc..) and you reveal it through the camera of your smartphone using VR. This is limited to 150 units worldwide and less than 50 seems to be available through shops so hurry up if you want one.

Price and where to buy it : This is sold at $43 and you can find it in nearly every Murphy's magic partner !

What you get : You get a small package, with inside, the most important thing which is your #Augmented code so you can access your “account” online and create your animation with your logo. You also get a card to use for bonus effect n°2. In order to get your effect setup, you have to send a mail to the team so they can customize the animation you chose (card, word, number etc..) to your logo, it takes less than 24 hours, they’re very reactive. Overall, you get a nice little package, the team is amazingly reactive and kind, I’m pretty happy with what I receive.

The pros and the cons : Here is the core of my review, let's begin with the cons, as I will usually be doing, I prefer to keep the good things for the end.

THE CONS :

  • Each #Augmented you buy is limited to 1 animation so if you want the card reveal AND the number reveal, you’ll have to buy 2 sets.

  • A single logo can’t be paired with multiple revelation. 1 logo = 1 revelation.

  • You have to use your own phone.

THE PROS :

  • I really like digital magic and this is the perfect example, it uses cards and technology so it’s not only an “app” thing in the spectator’s mind but more a magic trick with the help of the camera on your phone.

  • The reveal is very cool in my opinion, I really like VR and the fact it can reveal a chosen card, it’s perfect.

  • The #Augmented team is awesome, they answer quickly to your mail and they work quickly too. I had a problem with my reveal and they fixed it within the day, I think the customer support is amazing.

  • The app can be installed on IOS or Android, so nobody is left (well, Windows Phone users, it’s time to move on).

  • It’s the perfect way, I think, to give your business cards. You do a trick with it first and then you hand it out, so that they will keep it and remember you.

Overall rating : This is a very nice idea, I have it on my phone 24/7 and I perform it a lot. I think if you like what you see on the trailer, you won’t be disappointed with it, 4/4 hearts

As for the difficulty level, you need to know a card force, 2/5 stars.

Similar products : I think you should check Collectricks 2 by Jean Charles Briand, those are very cool apps !
