Review : "Fishing" by G Alexander

Product description : Everybody know the classic trick in which a spectator choose a card, put it back in the pack. The pack is then placed inside a bag and a rope is introduced, the magician places one end of the rope inside the bad and when he pulls, the rope has made a knot around the selected card. What Fishing does is that it modernises the plot but using earphones instead of a rope. But is it good ? Let's find out !

Price and where to buy it : This is sold at $49.95 and you can find it in nearly every Murphy's magic partner !

What you get : The packaging is interesting, they used the box earphones are usually supplied and stuck a sticker on it so you know it's the fishing trick. I really liked the fact they reused the box. Inside, you will find : a link to watch online instructions, those are very well made but at the same time, a little bit short. I would have liked that they went a little bit more in depth about the working of the trick. Still, you learn what you need to learn. You are also supplied with 4 gimmicks, each of one is used during the routine to make the whole thing work. They are very well made , you couldn't tell those earphone have been gimmicked (apart from the fact they don't work). Pretty happy with what I received.

The pros and the cons : Here is the core of my review, let's begin with the cons, as I will usually be doing, I prefer to keep the good things for the end.

THE CONS :

  • The price is high but considering each gimmick has been made up by hand and you don't have any art and craft to do, I think the price is fair.

  • As I said, the earphones can't be used or examined.

  • Card can't be signed.

THE PROS :

  • I've always wanted to do the classic rope trick but it felt unatural taking a rope out of nowhere for the trick. It now uses common props that the audience can relate to because almost everybody is using one of those. And making the connection with the audience is very important, they won't think it's something gimmicked if it is something they're all used to.

  • The quality of the whole thing is great, it works very well and you can use not only the classic papperbag but also a backpack for example so your whole routine feels more modern and justified.

  • Instructions, even if they're short, are well made and crystal clear. They do give you ideas on what to « fish » apart from cards and I think that, with a little bit of creativity, you can come up with amazing routines.

  • It packs small and plays big, you can use the routine in a close-up situation but in a cabaret one as well.

Overall rating : Finally the classic « rope » trick gets modernised and Undermagic has made a great job with great gimmick. Will I use it everytime ? Maybe not because it requires stuff like a bag etc.. But I really liked the whole routine and the reactions I got doing it were very good. A solid 3/4 hearts for me !

As for the difficulty level, a little force and you're good to go, 1/5 stars.

Similar products : The classic rope trick is still being sold today but if you want a more modern way of doing it, fishing is for you !

Thanks to Murphy's for sending me this product !
