Review : "The Matrix Pad" by Richard Griffin

Product description : A small note pad is shown, 4 dots are drawn and visually, with (nearly) no cover, they all travel to one corner. At the end, everything can be given out to the spectator, without any switch. Is it worth getting ? Let's find out !

Price and where to buy it : This is sold at $29.95 and you can find it in nearly every Murphy's partner shop !

What you get : You get plastic zip bag, the one we used to see every magic trick a while ago. Inside, you can find a DVD which is pretty well shot, no fancy editing, straight, to the point. You also get a « gimmicked » pad, a regular one and some gimmicks if I can say that.

The pros and the cons : Here is the core of my review, let's begin with the cons, as I will usually be doing, I prefer to keep the good things for the end.

THE CONS :

  • The gimmicks provided, because of what they are made of, won't stay in place on the pad which is a shame because when you're setting up the trick, you will leave the pad in that position in your pocket. You have to be carefull while carrying it.

  • The pad provided is quite big compared to my hands which is a problem for the last dot to travel. Bare in mind the last one isn't as « instant » as the others.

  • You will use one (or two if you want to give the final one to the spectator) sheet of the pad each time. Hopefully, refills cost nothing since they're just post it note.

THE PROS :

  • It's nice to have a full ungimmicked pad so you can pick up sheets from it everytime you wan't to perform the trick. It's a good and a bad thing since you will have 2 pads to carry around if you want to do so. You could pick up sheets from the gimmicked one but it's best to not remove every sheets from it.

  • It's a clever method, I think it's the more workable one around here. I thought using the distortion method (from Wayne Houchin), it would be better but too many limitations because of that. I just wish the stuff would be a little bit stronger.

  • The routine is well structured and made in a way so that, at the end, you're completely clean.

  • Reset is not that long if you have some already prepared sheets on you but it should take 20/30 seconds.

  • It's not that difficult to do, the last move is nearly impossible for me since I have small hands but I'm thinking about another way of making the spot travel.

  • Stuff to make new gimmicks shouldn't be hard to find so it's good to know you can make a new gimmicked pad easily.

Overall rating : It's a fun little trick, not a stand alone piece in your show but a nice addition. Unfortunately, due to the limitations of the hand size and the fact gimmicks won't stay in place, I won't be using this. 2,5/4 hearts.

As for the difficulty level, overall, it's not difficult to execute, the last bit will need a little bit more work but still, nothing impossible. 2/5 stars.

Similar products : Matrix can be done with everything, from the famous coins to sugar, to holes on cards.. They're millions ways to achieve such effect, you have to find the one which suits you the best !

Thanks to Murphys Magic for sending me this product !
