Review : "Selfie" by Alex Pandrea and Simion Stefan

Product description : What if you could control the camera of a borrowed phone without touching it ? This is what you will be able to do with the gimmick provided in Selfie as well as something else (turning the volume up) which can be very interesting but let's find out if this is worth your consideration !

Price and where to buy it : This is sold at $24.95 and you can find it in nearly every Murphys Magic partner shop.

What you get : You get a big DVD case with the DVD inside, the DVD is quite short, less than 30 minutes but you learn everything you need to learn. The production is quite good, not the best I've seen but decent enough. The gimmick is inside a little black velvet bag. Gimmicks will work with most of the phone, I'm just not sure for the Windows Phone. For the price, I'm pretty satisfied with what you get.

The pros and the cons : Here is the core of my review, let's begin with the cons, as I will usually be doing, I prefer to keep the good things for the end.

THE CONS :

  • Trick and technology.. It's hard to judge it since some of my friend were aware of the gimmick (it's something you can buy on the internet without looking for a magic prop). But even without that, will this trick impress young people ? Nowadays, you can do pretty much everything with phone so taking picture by itself won't impress young people which are used to deal with technology. And, at the opposite, will this impress older people ? Some of them are not very aware of technology but they know you can achieve lots of things with it so, even if it's not the real explication, they could say « yes, it's technology ».

  • Your hands, at least one, won't be in play during the trick.

  • You have to touch the phone of the spectator to set it up for the trick. I'm very often with my phone and if somebody would have done the trick to me, I would have noticed something different with my phone. Maybe not everybody is like me but maybe some people can tell when something is different on their phone.

THE PROS :

  • It's a very strong trick if performed correctly, you will have to build a nice presentation (ideas are given on the DVD) to lead them to a place where it's impossible for them to think of any solution. It's not that hard but you will have to convince them it's real.

  • As I said previously, the gimmick can also turn the volume up, which is very useful if you have a little bit of imagination to come up with trick using this principle.

  • The gimmick is pretty small and works very well.

  • You can use both Android and IOS device.

  • You're clean at the end, even if people may suspect something if they look closely at their phone. I don't think it's an issue.

  • It's impromptu, if you have the gimmick on you, you can just walk to someone, borrow their phone and go right into the trick.

Overall rating : I very much enjoyed this one, pretty original and gets great reactions from people. I will definately be using this more in a casual situation but still a good trick, 3.5/4 hearts.

As for the difficulty level, there is nothing complicated, just know a little bit of « technology », but don't worry, it's fairly easy, 1/5 stars.

Similar products : I can't name similar tricks, well done guys !
